Forio d’Ischia
Forio experienced several Saracen invasions over the centuries, whose traces remain in local architecture. In the 1950s, artists from around the world met here, attracted by the scenery and the residents’ hospitality. Watchtowers and defensive towers stand along the coast; the best known is the Torrione.
The historic centre has noble palaces, narrow streets, local painters’ studios, small ceramic workshops, and churches rich in history and art. The Church of Soccorso stands at the edge of Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, formerly Piazza del Soccorso, renovated for Pope John Paul II’s pastoral visit on 5 May 2002. Under certain conditions, the optical phenomenon known as the green flash can sometimes be seen at sunset. The area also offers shopping typical of a popular tourist destination.
Other attractions include the beaches of San Francesco di Paola, Chiaia and Citara, the renowned Giardini Poseidon thermal park, and Sorgeto Bay’s natural hot-water pools among volcanic rocks. The distinctive La Mortella gardens are also worth visiting during a stay on the island.
Forio includes districts such as Monterone and Cierco and the village of Panza, which, like the main town, experienced Saracen attacks whose traces remain in local architecture.
